MOORINGS OPEN: The Visitor Moorings in Portree were inspected and overhauled in April 2021, and are now available for use
The Portree Moorings Association
The Portree Moorings Association was formed in 1989 when it was granted a Section 34 Agreement over an area of seabed in Portree Bay for the purpose of laying moorings for use by both locals and visitors. Portree is unique in having exemption from Council powers in respect of laying and maintenance of moorings under The Highland Harbours Order 1991.
The Association boasts close to 70 members at present and is managed by a proactive committee combined with an enthusiastic membership, all of whom are keen to maintain investment in both the moorings and wider harbour infrastructure.
Through funding from the Crown Estates, via Marine Stewardship Grants; plus assistance from The Highland Council and the Local Enterprise Company, the Association has provided mooring trots for 25 smaller boats and 16 larger yachts/commercial vessels to date. In addition, thirteen visitor moorings have been laid and long-established fisherman’s swinging moorings have been re-aligned to optimise the use of the available space in the harbour.
